Fall Sports Have Triumphant Start to Seasons

Cara Cooper – Sports Editor

With the fall sports season just over a month underway, it seems as if each Roanoke College team is finding its season to already be successful.  On every field, court, and course the Maroons have competed on they have found ways to be successful.

The word ‘undefeated’ is a hard task for any sports team to be able to associate their season with, but for a cross country team it is basically impossible. The RC men’s cross country so far this season, however, can brag about it.  Even though they have only competed in two meets, the Randolph College Invitation and the Washington and Lee Invitational, they have defeated every team they have come up against, including many ODAC rivals.  The Maroon’s are lead by three impressive freshmen runners, Andrew Bernstein, Austin Grubb, and Drew Landgren.  These three have been neck and neck with each other and seem to be pushing each other towards greatness.

The women’s cross country team has also been running astoundingly well, finishing second at Randolph College and third at Washington and Lee.  They are lead by returning 1st team All-ODAC runner Maggie Moore ’11.

The men and women will be hosting the RC Invitational this weekend.  Look for this to be the preview for the ODAC Championships coming up in October.

The men’s soccer team also boasted the title of being undefeated, winning their first six games without giving up a goal.  They have slipped a couple times but still have a solid record of 7-2, putting them atop the ODAC standings. Two-time All-American Mike Stark ’11 continues to be a leader for the Maroons, with two goals on the year already, one of which was a game-winner in overtime against Methodist University.  Stark was named ODAC player of the week earlier this month.

The men defeated ODAC rival Washington & Lee easily 4-0 on Wednesday night.  They will travel to Lynchburg to play Lynchburg College Saturday night.

On the women’s side of soccer, the women have rolled to a 5-3-1 record, scoring 16 goals in their last three games.  The Maroon’s have a 21-7 goal differential this season, lead by Steph Parentau ’13 with five goals and three time All-ODAC selection Jessica Welfare ’11 with four goals.

The women return to Kerr Stadium Saturday afternoon to play Bridgewater College. Game time is set for 1 p.m.

The volleyball team is continuing the winning ways of RC with their own record of 9-3.  Earlier this season, the women traveled to Emory and Henry to dominate their invitational, going undefeated. Maggie Moore ’11 was named tournament MVP.  Since then the women have defeated ODAC foes Hollins and Guilford.  They will get back on the court Tuesday night, 6:30 p.m., at Bast Gym to take on Emory and Henry.

The word ‘undefeated’ has been a common theme for many Maroon’s sports teams thus far this season.  Their success this early in the season can only be an indication for more later on.
