Cross Country Teams Win Maroon Invitational

Cara Cooper – Sports Editor

The Roanoke College men’s and women’s cross country teams hosted the RC Invitation on Saturday. The meet, which served as a sort of parent’s weekend for the team who will be out of town Saturday, drew a huge crowd at Mowles Spring Park, and RC’s runner did not disappoint their fans.

The women’s team had three runners in the top five, Maggie Moore ’11 came in first with a time of 21:05, and she was followed thereafter by Lauren Kennedy ’14 who finished third and Emily Reichenbach ’13 who finished in fifth place.

Moore said this victory was even sweeter since it was won on the team’s home turf.

“The girl I passed right at the end [of the race] to win beat me a couple weeks ago, so it was fun to come back and beat her at home,” Moore said. “It was definitely exciting, especially because it was a home meet. Everyone had their family and friends there. It was very exciting to win.”

Moore’s win helped her to earn ODAC Runner of the Week honors.  This is the first time in her four year career at RC that she had received the honor.

“I’m almost more excited to be named that than actually winning the race,” Moore said.  “It’s a huge honor.”

The women are having a great season so far, finishing in the top three of every race they’ve competed in this year.  Moore credits her team’s camaraderie to their success.

“We work hard and have fun.  We all enjoy running and enjoy being together so that helps us to work hard at practice and makes the season more fun,” Moore said.

The men’s team followed in the women’s footsteps, winning their third meet of the year.  They also had three runners finish in the top five. The three freshmen phenomenon Andrew Bernstein, Drew Landgren, and Austin Grubb finished in second, third and fifth place respectively. They have been the top three runners for the Maroons in every meet this season.

Both teams will travel to Salisbury, MD this weekend to compete in the Tidewater Classic.  Only four meets remain until the ODAC Championships on Oct. 30, but both teams should be able to keep going strong until then.
