The men’s soccer team fell to Lynchburg with a 3-0 loss on Sept. 25. Â The Lynchburg Hornets are one of Roanoke College’s rivals. The boys did not give up. They continued to put pressure on the opponent’s defense and goalie by outshooting them by 10-8 in the second half. Cameron Travalini ’14, Michael Stark ’11, andÂ Jason Ryan ’12 got the opportunity to take shots on the goal. Unfortunately the Hornets got the lucky break. Ryan Russell ’13, goal keeper, was able to save four shots on the goal.
Roanoke College held a close 4-3 margin in corner kicks with the Hornets. Half way through the first half, a Hornet scored. RC was able to hold them off until the second half. After two minutes into the second half another goal was scored. The third goal was shot in the 63rd minute of the game.
The Maroons constantly pushed for a victory whether or not time was against them. RC fans proudly cheered for their team’s hard work. They worked together well and continued to have a positive attitude on the field.
The Maroons were able bounce back from that loss Wednesday night when they took on Averett University at home.Â It was the first time RC has played against them since 1999.
It took 87 minutes of play, but the Maroons two-time All-American Stark was able to find the goal for his third game winner of the year off a corner from Ryan.Â
The win put the Maroons at 8-3 overall this season, 1-1 in ODAC play, putting them second in the ODAC.
The men will return to the field at home Saturday when they take on Randolph-Macon at 1 p.m.Â They will also have to travel to two other ODAC schools this week, going to Bridgewater on Wednesday and then to Virginia Wesleyan the following Saturday.
