Friday, March 18, 2011the UVA Men’s Glee Club is celebrating 140 years of “harmony, love and brotherhood.” At 8:00 p.m. the Roanoke College Women’s Choir, Oriana, will join them, singing Mozart’s Requiem as they kick off the weekend long celebration.
Comprised of around forty women, Oriana is in its second year at RC. This year the number of members in this choir has doubled.
The choir will split to sing the twelve -movement piece. A chamber orchestra and four professional soloists for the concert will accompany them.
Rehearsals for the concert began in December after the choir finished their holiday performances.
“I believe this kind of collaboration is a first for Roanoke College, and for a group so young, we’re only two years old, to perform such a major work and to be asked to do it is such a great honor and a testament to the ladies’ skill and hard work,” Jeffrey Sandborg, Oriana choir director, Â said.
During various movements during the concert some of the women will be singing different parts, some not in their accustomed ranges. Sopranos and altos will interchange their part, which shows a great diversity in the women’s voices.
“We really hit the ground running with the music and the ladies have really worked hard to get where they are. It’s very exciting,” Sandborg said.
Gearing up for the performance the choir has kicked rehearsals into high gear, running through the entire piece and working on last problem areas.
“Mozart’s definitely been challenging but I feel like it’ll make us better singers and I’m glad to have had the experience of doing a renowned piece with many talented singers,” said Darlene Harris,’14.
“This is big-boy music. It’s not just a piece for college kids. It’s a world favorite,” Sandborg said.
Grammy-award winning conductor at UVA Frank Albinder, previous director of the world-renowned group Chanticleer, conducts this concert.
The performance with the UVA Men’s Glee Club will be reprised in RC April 9, 2011, at 8:00 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Church. Dr. Sandborg will conduct this later concert.
