“Doctor Who” returns for sixth series

Entertainment Editor

Time to fire up the TARDIS and grab your Sonic Screwdriver. Doctor Who will be returning to BBC America on April 23.
The sixth series will be continuing where series five left off as the Doctor and Amy investigate the strange silence that caused the Doctor’s infamous TARDIS to explode.

This series will also explain River Song’s identity, as her connection to the Doctor is unknown.

Matt Smith will reprise his role as the eleventh Doctor and Karen Gillan and Arthur Darvill will continue as Amy Pond and Rory Williams respectively as his companions.

Doctor Who originally ran from 1963 to 1989 on the BBC and consisted of 26 seasons during that span with William Hartnell staring as the first Doctor. The series tells the story of the mysterious Time Lord and his TARDIS, which stands for Time and Relative Dimensions in Space. The Doctor travels across time and through various galaxies with his companions. The first of the series aired in 2005 with Christopher Eccleston as the ninth Doctor. Popular Doctors have been BBC veteran actors Tom Baker, Peter Davison, and David Tennant as the fourth, fifth and tenth Doctors respectively.

Series six will consist of thirteen episodes with a hiatus in the middle of the season and continuing for the final episodes in September.

In the first episode, the Doctor, Rory, Amy, and River Song will meet in Utah in the 1960s and will go to the Oval Office in Washington D.C.

A short prequel for the first episode of the series was released on the show’s official website. It shows American president Richard Nixon receiving a phone call in the Oval Office from a girl. As Nixon recognizes the voice, it tells him to turn around and look behind him, to which he refuses. The phone line goes dead and the camera turns to see a dark figure standing next to Nixon.

The end of the fifth season had fans on the edge of their seats and eager to know what will happen next. Hopefully the questions that the last episode created will be answered in the next series. Perhaps this will be the series where fans learn the identity of the mysterious Doctor.
