Ladies and gentlemen, it’s finally that time of the year to bring out the heels, cocktail dresses, and tuxedos. Yes, this Saturday is the 5th annual President’s Ball. While many RC students look forward to this event every year, some do not even know how the custom originated.
The RC President’s Ball started in 2007 to honor the beginning of President Maxey’s career as the President of Roanoke College. Apparently, the event was initially meant to be a one-time deal, but due to the great reception the event got in its 1st year, President Maxey decided to make the ball an annual event.
The 2011 President’s Ball will be held at the Colket Center on Saturday, November 5th from 8:00 pm to 12:00 am, with each floor of the building playing a different type of music. The ballroom will feature The Domino Band playing swing music, while the commons will have jazz and blues music, and the Cavern will have pop music. The theme is “A Black and White Affair,” so black and white attire are encouraged, but not required.
Last year, the ball had about 750 attendees, including RC students, faculty, and staff. Stephanie Floyd ’14, who attended the ball last year, said she’s excited for the music. “I’m definitely looking forward to the live swing band in the ballroom…that was the best part last year. And it’s also nice to get all dolled up occasionally!”
“Well I’m excited to go because it’s my first year here, and I don’t really know what to expect yet!” Tani Penn-Timity ’15 said.
To sweeten the deal and encourage attendance, Roanoke College is even offering an incentive to the class with the highest attendance. Everyone in the class with the highest attendance will be entered in to win a $250 Visa Gift Card.
Come on out and join fellow RC students this Saturday at the President’s Ball!
