RC’s Men’s and Women’s Cross Country teams finished 5th in the ODAC Championships last Saturday in Bedford.  Tim Smith ’12 took 1st place over-all and Grace England ’15 finished in 4th for the women’s race.

The men earned 115 points, which is their best score since 2007.  Smith took home the ODAC Championship title along with Runner and Scholar-Athlete of the Year.  The last Roanoke runner to place 1st in the Championships was Eric Johnson in 2006.  Smith finished with a time of 25:29.

“Terrific strategy and patience led to his victory,” Head Coach Finn Pincus said.

Teammate AJ Bernstein ’14 came in at 27:11, just 6 seconds away from receiving All-ODAC honors, but he still placed 17th.  Behind him with a personal best were Austin Grubb ’14 in 27th and Ian Trepainer ’15 in 33rd.  The last scoring Maroon, Drew Landgren ’14 crossed the line as 38th, also with a personal record.

The women were led by ODAC Rookie of the Year Grace England ‘14 who, like many of her teammates, finished the season with a personal best of 23:13.  She improved 30 places from the 1 mile mark to grab 4th.

Behind her, clocking their season-bests were Leigha Schimmoeller ’15 and Hannah Cline’15 in 18th and 21st places, respectively.  Emily Reichenbach ’13 in 37th and Whitney Spence ’15 in 41st rounded out the team’s scoring.

Coach Pincus is pleased with the teams’ finishes in this conference meet.

“Finishing 5th is good considering that 5 teams have been ranked in the top 10 of the Southeast Region over the season,” Pincus said. “There are about 45 teams in the Region that stretches from Washington, DC to Florida and over to Texas.”
