Ladies and gentlemen, it’s that time of year to get out your Maroon pride attire and warm up those vocal chords for excessive amounts of cheering: BASKETBALL SEASON.

While both basketball teams have been in action since the middle of November, their ODAC conference season will formally kick off this Saturday, December 3rd, with the annual celebration of Maroon Madness at the Bast Center

This year’s Maroon Madness is exceptionally unique, as it will feature the men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader Saturday afternoon. This year, the event is being hosted by the Student Government Association in conjunction with CAB.

The men’s game will commence at 1 PM against Lynchburg College. Maroon coach Page Moir, recently named the ODAC’s all-time winningest coach, will return to the sidelines for his 23rd season. Last season, the Maroons doubled their number of wins from their previous season, and are primed for another improved season this winter. Lynchburg’s team is coached by Hilliary Scott, a former Maroon star. The competition should prove to be enjoyable.

Following the men’s game, the lady Maroons will take the Bast Center floor to square off against Emory & Henry College. The team will be looking to return to the ODAC Championship game, led by Nicci Moats ’12, who was named all-ODAC last season. The team is coached by Susan Dunagan, who is returning for her 31st season on sidelines. Dunagan, who is already the ODAC all-time wins leader, needs 19 more wins to become the sixth coach the NCAA Division III history to amass 600 career wins.

Besides the intense competition on the court, the fall and springs sports team will be recognized. A number of contests and drawings will pepper the day including a three-point contest, a free-throw contest, Roanoke sports trivia, pocket litter, name-that-tune, and a half-court shot contest. The event will continue the annual Maroon Madness banner contest. Among prizes being offered include two iPod Nanos, a 32-inch flat screen television, a Wii game system, a $100 gift card to Kroger, and a $1000 gift certificate books store, as well as a variety of gift cards from area business and restaurants.

The event should prove to be an exciting and memorable way to kick off the Roanoke College basketball season, so wear your maroon and white and come on out this Saturday to cheer the teams on!
