“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is one of the must see movies of the year. The thriller has grossed over $89 million dollars thus far. The movie is based off the award winning novel of the same name by the late Swedish author Stieg Larsson and is the first book in his trilogy known as the “Millennium series.”

The movie stars Daniel Craig as Mikael Blomkvist, an investigative journalist for a magazine, and Rooney Mara as Lisbeth Salander, a freelance agent who specializes in investigating people. The unlikely pair team up to investigate a crime that took place on a secluded island forty years ago.

What also makes this movie so interesting and suspenseful for the audience is the fact that the man who hired the pair to solve the mystery has a family tree which includes Nazis, rapists, alcoholics, and murderers. Also adding to the nature of the thriller is a graphic rape scene, which takes place early on.

In addition to the movies’ thriller aspect is the character of Lisbeth Salander. The first instinct of the audience is to be scared of her because of her rage and frightening features as well as her unwelcoming presence and attitude. Then your second impulse is to be scared for her and that’s the feeling that lasts throughout the entire movie.

Her appeal arises from a combination of vulnerability and ruthless proficiency. Lisbeth can hack any machine. Overall Mara gives an unforgettable performance as Salander and captures Salander’s unpredictable and fascinating essence beautifully.

“The gruesome pattern of criminality that Lisbeth and Mikael uncover is a manifestation of general evil that spreads throughout the upper echelons of the nation’s economy and government,” said Director Fincher.

Most critics also agree with audiences around the world that the movie is an ice cold thriller in the right way. On the popular review site, Rotten Tomatoes, critics gave the movie an 86% which is extremely good, due to the site being notoriously famous for giving movies harsh reviews. Audiences gave the movie a 90%.

“Brutal yet captivating, “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” is the result of David Fincher working at his lurid best with total role commitment from star Rooney Mara” said one critic.

“David Fincher’s adaptation of the international best-seller is a triumph of craftsmanship over material,” said Joe Morgenstern of “The Wall Street Journal”.

However, of course there are some critics who did not enjoy the movie, such as Peter Travers from Rolling Stone Magazine who stated “Fincher’s Dragon Tattoo is a faithful adaptation that brings the dazzle but shortchanges on the daring… It’s gloriously rendered but too impersonal to leave a mark.”

Overall, I would recommend “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” if you are looking for a great thriller that keeps you on the edge of your seat. However I do not recommend you go on a first date to see this movie or take children. The movie definitely deserves its R rating.
