The men’s and women’s cross country teams held the Maroon Invitational this past Saturday. The meet was held at Mowels Spring Park, approximately 3 miles from the main campus here at Roanoke. Both the men’s and women’s teams won handily in this meet, their 3rd meet of the season.
Women’s cross country ran first this weekend in their 5000m race. Grace England took first place overall with a time of 20:55.9. Leigha Schimmoeller finished in 2nd place with a final time of 21:28. Emily Reichenbach and Hannah Cline both finished in the top 10 this week with times of 22:17 and 22:30 respectively. Anna Noble rounded out the scoring positions crossing the line 23 minutes and 24 seconds after the starting gun. The women took first place in the meet scoring 29 points and beating Southern Virginia.
In addition, the two Maroons, senior Tim Smith and sophomore Grace England, were named ODAC Cross Country Runners of the week. This is the second time this season that Smith had earned this award, and the first honoring for England this year.
Men’s cross country had just as much success as the girls this week taking first place in the 8000 meter race with 31 points. Tim Smith led the men with a first place finish overall and a final time of 27:54.3. Austin Grubb came in second for the Maroons and 4th place overall crossing the line at 29:52. Dan Zimmerman, Cody Meadows and Brian Ruane rounded out the scoring positions with times all under 32 minutes. Southern Virginia came in second place to the Maroons in the men’s race as well.
Both the cross country squads will be racing again this Saturday, September 29th at the Cathcart Invitational in Salisbury, MD.
