Sixty-seven year-old Roanoke College Alumnus, John McAfee, founder of McAfee, Inc. which developed the world’s first computer virus scanner, has recently fled from police in Belize who seek his cooperation in their investigation of Gregory Faull’s murder. McAfee lived next door to Faull, 52, who was found dead in his home last Sunday.
McAfee fled his home and is now in hiding, fearful of what he has called a “corrupt government”. He has been conducting phone interviews over that past few days declaring his innocence and stating that talking face to face it too dangerous at the moment. His current whereabouts are unknown but, it is suspected that he has not left the country of Belize. He will not comment on his location, but is content that he is safe where he is. Fearful that the government will triangulate his phone calls, McAfee changes his phone every few hours.
In one phone interview, he said, “You can say I’m paranoid about it, but they will kill me, there is no question. They’ve been trying to get me for months.”
The Belize police say that they have good reason to question McAfee. His neighbors, spear-headed by Mr. Faull, compiled a list of complaints against McAfee and filed them with local officials last month.
The petitions states that McAfee’s security guards walk around with shotguns at night and up and down the beach . . . They have been known to shine spotlights right into peoples’ eyes at night and act aggressively with their guns, chambering a bullet and nonsense such as this. People are scared to walk down the beach at night as a result. The tourists are terrified.”
Other complaints include the arrival of taxis and delivery trucks at all hours and that his “vicious dogs” run amok within his property. Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â

John McAfee speaks at the official presentation of equipment ceremony at the San Pedro Police Station in Ambergris Caye, Belize, Nov. 8, 2012. McAfee has been identified as a “person of interest” in the killing of his neighbor, Gregory Viant Faull.
\”These animals get loose and run as a pack. Three residents have been bitten and three tourists have been attacked.”
According to this particular complaint, when one of McAfee’s dogs attacked a young woman in front of one neighbor and even McAfee himself, he “did nothing about it”. Neighbors state that is was Gregory Faull that confronted McAfee about this particular problem.
McAfee states that on the Friday prior to Faull’s murder he discovered that his dogs had been poisoned. He claims that to be humane he shot four of the dogs to put them out of their misery. Sunday morning Faull was found deceased in his home with a bullet wound to his head. A 9 mm casing was discovered at the scene and Faull’s laptop and iPhone were missing.
Prime Minister Dean Barrow spoke on Wednesday that McAfee needed to “man up” and speak to the authorities. “He seems to be extremely paranoid. I would go so far as to say bonkers,” Barrow said.
McAfee, the 2008 commencement speaker at Roanoke College, stated in his speech, “But, questioning the authority of accepted ideas is not always a bad thing-whether these ideas relate to business, culture, relationships or even religious beliefs. I might go further and say that questioning all authority might not be a bad thing. You may not be aware that you submit to authority, but you do. You submit to the authority of fashion, the authority of your cultural icons and the authority of your religion. The authority of your own knowledge-an authority, by the way that has been greatly increased during these past few years-is probably your greatest authority.”
McAfee denies reports that he has murder his neighbor as well as reports that he is insane. Recent photos have surface showing McAfee pressing a pistol to his temple and toting a shotgun.
“I’ve never seen myself walking around shirtless carrying a shotgun, what an absurd thing to do…I would walk around armed, but mostly with a pistol in a holster and wearing clothes for god sake.”
McAfee moved to Belize five years ago after losing all but $4 million dollars of his fortune. Currently police are still inquiring about his whereabouts.
