Dear Sue Freedom

Dear Sue,

I was gone for a semester studying abroad. I had so much freedom there that it was a bit uncomfortable coming home. I had a curfew and had to tell them where I was all the time. I am worried that Christmas will be really awkward. What is the best way to avoid this?

Dear Needing a bit of Freedom

Your concerns are understandable. When someone is unhappy with their family, it shows in their body language and comments, despite attempts to keep the peace. The best way to deal with this is to talk to your parents. Sit them down and tell them that you are feeling smothered. You are no longer a child, especially after relying on no one but yourself for an entire semester in another country. Let them know that you understand their point of view, but you are not happy. As long as you stay cool and collected, your parents should respect your opinion. Best of luck!
