Lady Maroons Clinch Third Straight Win In ODAC
The Roanoke College women’s basketball team defeated Washington and Lee on Wednesday 58-47, picking up their third consecutive ODAC win. With this win over the Generals, the Maroons now have a record of 8-10. Head Coach, Susan Dunagan, is now only three wins shy of number 600 for her career.
Top scorer for the Maroons was Tatum McKee who scored 17 points, shooting 7-11 with five rebounds. Laurel Hankins tallied 14 points and seven rebounds while Paxton Gwin put up 10 points and eight rebounds.
The Maroons were quick to score, opening the first half with two back to back layups by Hankins and Rachel Dellehunt. Roanoke College kept the lead in the first seven minutes, bumping their lead by five points to 7-2. The Generals fought back, outscoring the Maroons, and pushing ahead 19-7.Washington and Lee continued their strong drive garnering a 21-14 lead with 7:31 remaining in the half. Anna Carter, Katie Deacon, and Paxton Gwin responded with layups to bring the Maroons back into the game and only behind by one. Kelsey Smith edged the Maroons passed the Generals just before the buzzer allowing them to enter the locker room with a 30-29 advantage.
At the start of the second half, Tatum McKee hit three consecutive baskets to put the Maroons up by seven, 42-35. Rachel Warrick of Washington and Lee scored six points to bring the lead back to the Generals. In the final minutes of the contest, Roanoke College outscored Washington and Lee 11-2 in order to clinch their third straight ODAC victory. The Maroons defeated the Generals 58-47.
The Generals’ top scorer was Rachel Warrick who put up 16 points. Shelbi Hendricks put up 10 points and Katy Wilson finished the game with 11 rebounds. The Maroons will return on Saturday January 26th to face off against Eastern Mennonite in the Bast Center. Tip-off is at 2:00 PM.
