Roanoke’s men’s soccer team ended last season by winning their ninth ODAC title against Virginia Wesleyan. They enter this season having been selected as the number one seed in the ODAC after earning 10 first place votes from the 12 coaches around the conference. The Maroons have proven why they were selected as the number one team in the conference after winning their first two games of the season over Averett University on Friday August 30th and Richard Stockton on Saturday August 31st.
The men won their home opener after taking the first game of the Roanoke Invitational. The Maroons scored the lone goal of the game at the 13:28 mark when senior Brian White passed the ball to sophomore Robbie Lentine. Roanoke had only one other shot on goal during the contest by Orestis Ilias, but Averett’s goalie, Michael Decker, blocked the shot. Roanoke’s Cole Sinclair and Will Dooley each played in the goal for half of the game and each had 3 saves during the contest to secure the victory.
The following day, the Maroons went on to play Richard Stockton. Richard Stockton struck first at the 7:00 mark when Chris Katona scored on a header with the assist being given by Anthony Colofranson. This was the only goal allowed by Will Dooley who had two saves that night. Ten minutes into the second half, Roanoke’s Johnny Hughes scored off of a pass by Mark Dinkel. The two teams continued the game to the end of regulation time with the score of 1-1. After seven minutes of overtime Adam Yesbeck found Tyler Carbaugh open and made a pass which led to the game winning goal. The Maroons had seven shots on goal during the game, scoring two goals off of Richard Stockton’s Bob Millar who played the entire 100 minutes in the goal.
The Maroons return to action this Saturday and Sunday at Lynchburg College for an invitational in which they face Marymount University and Carroll University. The men won’t return to play at Roanoke until the 21st of September when they will play Christopher Newport University. Until then the men will look to continue their winning streak.
