Women’s Soccer Ends Losing Streak with Big Win

Richard Gill

The Women’s soccer team ended their losing skid with a dominant win in Wednesday night’s game against the Vixens of Sweet Briar College. The Maroons came to the game determined to win, and it did not take long to see the results of their determination when Nathalie Torres scored within the first 12 seconds of the game off of a pass by Marlana Barnard.

The Maroons didn’t want to give the Vixens a chance to recover and steal the game back, so Roanoke scored 2 more goals as insurance in the first half. Lauren O’Brien put the ball in the net unassisted with 10 minutes left in the half, then, with only a few seconds left in the half, Lauren O’Brien passed to Nathalie Torres who then scored just before heading to the locker room for half time.

The Maroons left the locker room minutes later, excited to finish the game with a bang. Just 3 minutes into the second half, Caitlin Ashley scored a goal with the assist being awarded to Maya Kantor. The Maroons still weren’t satisfied with the safe 4-0 lead; Abbe Guarino scored one last goal on Sweet Briar College off of a pass by Lauren O’Brien at the 51:37 mark. The remaining minutes of the game were played without much threat of Sweet Briar scoring a goal.

Lauren O’Brien, Caitlin Ashley, and Abbe Guarino each scored a goal during the match and Nathalie Torres led the team with 2 goals of her own. Marlana Barnard and Maya Kantor each contributed with an assist and Lauren O’Brien had 2 assists. The match featured the 11 starters for the Maroons as well as 14 different substitutes throughout the game.

The goal keeper for the Vixens, Katie Tillson, had a rough 90 minutes allowing the 5 goals and making 13 saves as the Maroons took 26 shots over the course of the night. The Maroons played great defense during the rare moments when they did not have control of the ball, as Sweet Briar only attempted to shoot 1 goal which was off-target.

The 5-0 victory over the Vixens of Sweet Briar College leaves Roanoke with a 3-6-1 record and a 1-3 record in ODAC play. This victory breaks a 5-game losing skid that the Maroons have suffered through since their September 14 game against Christopher Newport University.

The Women’s soccer team will take this huge win as they travel to both Randolph-Macon College and Randolph College this week. Come out and support your Maroons when they return to Kerr Stadium on Saturday, October 12 at 1:00 against Virginia Wesleyan College in an ODAC Conference match.
