Field Hockey Review
The Field Hockey season ended in late October, but we wanted to include a quick recap of the end to their season to add to this week’s Fall sport compilation.
Field hockey opened their season 2-5-0 winning both the season opener and the ODAC conference opener in an overtime battle against Virginia Wesleyan. At the time, Virginia Wesleyan was ranked #1 in the ODAC conference.
The women finished out the season 1-4 in their last 5 games. After losing against Rhodes College 2-5 and Washington and Lee University 0-5, the Maroons fought back against Sweet Briar College winning that contest in a 3-0 shutout.
3 Maroons were named to the Field Hockey All-ODAC squads. Stacy Bechtel ’15, Kelly Finn ’14 and Shelbi Holloman ’17 were among those named to the All-Conference squads.
Stacy Bechtel was named to the All-ODAC Second Team this year. In addition, last year Bechtel was honored with a spot on the Third Team All-ODAC Squad. Stacy was crucial this season in her role as a defensive player.
Kelly Finn was named to the All-ODAC Third Team this year. Finn played in 15 of the teams 16 games totaling almost 1000 minutes played this season. Kelly scored 1 goal this season with 23 shots in total.
Shelbi Holloman was also honored with a spot on the Third Team All-ODAC squad. Shelbi was one of the team’s leading scorers, scoring 5 goals this season with 2 assists. Shelbi was honored with the ODAC Field Hockey Player of the week in late September when she scored the game winning goal against Virginia Wesleyan. Holloman was the first Roanoke player to earn that honor since 2004.
Goodluck to the Field Hockey team in their preparation for next Fall season. Go Maroons!
