The Maroons Men’s Basketball travelled to face the Eastern Mennonite University Royals on Saturday, February 1st ,and played one of their closest games of the season. The Maroons came out on top with a narrow 88 – 87 win in a game where their largest lead was six points.
The game started off quickly when David Falk of Eastern Mennonite stole the ball from Julian Ramirez and took it all the way to the basket to dunk it. The two point lead lasted just thirteen seconds before Daniel Eacho made a layup that tied the game followed by Julian Ramirez making a good free throw to take the lead. Just ten seconds after the Maroons took the lead, Eastern Mennonite stole it back with a good layup of their own by RJ Sims.
All of this action came in just the first minute and a half of the game, and the rest of the first half sounded very similar, with the lead changing a total of eleven times. With just a minute remaining in the first half, Daniel Eacho made a good layup to give the Maroons a one point lead which they were able to hold onto and take to the locker room. The score at the half was 44 – 43 in favor of the Maroons.
The Maroons held onto their lead for one minute into the second half before the lead changed yet again in favor of Eastern Mennonite University as James Williams made a good free throw. With 4:53 remaining, the Royals took a lead that was never larger than three points, but they were capable of holding onto it until another good layup by Daniel Eacho gave the Maroons another lead with 2:07 remaining. Andrew Daniels helped reinforce the Maroons’ lead with a three pointer, but the four point lead was not enough to make Eastern Mennonite give up.
With 45 seconds left the Royals made a layup to decrease the Maroons’ lead to two and with just 0:09 showing on the clock RJ Sims sank a three to give Eastern Mennonite a one point lead. Without taking a time out the Maroons charged down the court determined to take back the game, and they did just that; Andrew Daniels fed the ball to John Fitchett who took the ball up for a game winning layup.
Daniel Eacho led the Maroons with 24 points, followed by Julian Ramireze with 21 points and Andrew Daniels with 13 points. Cameron Smith and Daniel Eacho each pulled down 7 rebounds to lead the Maroons.
The Maroons return to action on Saturday February 8th, when they travel to Shenandoah University to play an Old Dominion Athletic Conference Match. The next home game will be Wednesday 2/12 when they host Randolph College which will be played at 5:00 pm in the Bast.
