Rough Patch for Baseball


After winning five straight games, the Roanoke College’s Baseball team has hit a rough patch.

On Saturday, Roanoke faced Virginia Wesleyan in a double header. Roanoke won the first game 3-1, but Wesleyan won the second game 2-0.

Cameron Holshouser pitched the first game of the double header for the Maroons. While pitching he only allowed four hits and one run. Holshouser struck out nine batters.

Wesleyan’s only score of the game was in the top second inning on a sacrifice fly. In the bottom of the second, Nowlin had a sacrifice fly to allow Decker to score. The Maroons got their second run in the bottom of the third. Decker had an RBI as Cassity scored. The third run for Roanoke in the game was in the bottom of the seventh. Decker again had the RBI with Black scoring since he had stolen third on the previous play. Roanoke won the first game 3-1.

In the second game John Ruhlman and Austin Gregory pitched. In the six innings Ruhlman played, he allowed six hits and two runs, but struck out five. Gregory in his three innings allowed three hits and struck out four players. Roanoke had no runs in the second game, losing 2-0.

On Sunday, the Maroons played another double header against Randolph-Macon, losing both games. Roanoke lost the first game 9-5 and the second game 20-1.

In the first game Roanoke scored first in the top of the second. Creel had two RBIs as Cassady and Oakey scored. Randolph-Macon had three scores in the bottom of the second. In the top of the fourth Creel had another RBI as he singled and Cassady scored. In the bottom of the fourth Randolph-Macon scored five and had a score in the bottom of the fifth. In the top of the seventh Decker and Nowlin scored for Roanoke. During the first game three people pitched for Roanoke: Jacob McMillan, Seth Bradley, and Rawlings Cumbea.

In the second game against Randolph-Macon, Roanoke’s only score was off a triple from Clifton, allowing Creel to score. During that game Roanoke used four pitchers. Harrison Richards pitched for 1.2 innings, Michael Mares pitched for 2.1 innings, David Loudon pitched for 1.2 innings, and Chad Hill pitched for 2.1 innings.

On Wednesday Roanoke lost to Averett University, 9-6. In the bottom of the first Clifton hit a home run for two RBI scoring both him and Black. Clifton did the exact same thing in the bottom of the fifth, again scoring Black. In the bottom of the fifth Oakey had an RBI scoring Decker. The last score in the game for Roanoke was in the bottom of the eight, Cassity had an RBI, scoring Nowlin. During this game Roanoke used nine pitchers, none of which pitched for more than one inning.

The Maroons play their next game at Bridgewater College on Saturday at noon.
