On April 17, Roanoke College’s student Relay for Life committee will once again host their annual relay on the back quad from 5:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Relay For Life is the signature fundraising event for the American Cancer Society, and each relay event hosted is “one more step towards more birthdays”.

Relay for Life 2015 is themed “Party with a Purpose,” and will feature exciting music, food for the walkers, and glow sticks to illuminate the track and light up the participants when the sun goes down. The two bands from 2014’s relay, Fourth and Coast and Once Upon A Time, will return to participate in this year’s event. To sign up for Relay, you can go to www.Relayforlife.org/roanokecollegeVA, or bring $10-$20 to sign up on April 17 at the sign-in table.

Last year, the teams participating at RC’s event raised about $11,000 and the goal for this year has been doubled in hopes of reaching a total donation of $20,000. The money raised will support the ACS’ programs for cancer research, education, and help provide direct services to patients and their families. This annual event hosted by the Relay Committee draws out teams of students every year to this great cause and also involves a survivors/fighters reception, a survivors lap, and a special luminaria lap to honor those affected by cancer in any way.

Over the current year, there will be about 1.6 million newly diagnosed cases of cancer, of those, approximately 36,000 will be in Virginia. Four million volunteers across the nation will have raised over 180 million dollars and RC’s events and student’s enthusiastic participation is a part of that.

The itinerary for this year’s Relay includes the opening ceremony, bands, outdoor activities, a luminaria lap, a survivors lap, and the closing ceremony. This walk is a celebration of survivors in hopes of not only fundraising, but also in inspiring everyone to dedicate themselves to help fight back. The back quad is normally filled with fun events and the buzz of students. Countless opportunities are presented throughout the night to join in and walk, or to support those who are.

Be sure to join the fight for more birthdays by donating to Relay, joining a team, or coming out solo on April 17 to join the cause!
