Spring Bingo: Welcome to Candyland

By Erin Hannon

On Jan. 29, the Campus Activities Board held its annual beginning of the semester Bingo event. Originally scheduled for Jan. 22, Bingo was postponed due to the snowstorm that hit the Roanoke Valley, leaving behind about a foot of snow in its wake.

The theme of the night was Candyland, which made an appearance through the candy-colored decorations and some of the prize packs. The sweet prizes included a s’mores maker, a cotton candy machine, an ice cream maker, and plenty of candy in general.

The grand prize of the night was a Nikon CoolPix camera, but winning it was no easy task. To win the camera, participants needed to win the “worst card” of Bingo. This involved everyone standing up, choosing one card, and sitting down if any one of the numbers on that card were called. While this seems simple enough, due to miscommunications, students had to play “worst card” over three times before the camera was eventually just raffled off won.

A fun new addition to Bingo this time around was the raffling off of prizes periodically throughout the night. The raffle gave even more students the chance to win different types of prizes, which ranged from Starbucks gift cards, to the complete Fast & Furious DVD collection.

As usual, the rest of the prizes for Bingo were also very exciting. The Music Lover’s Prize Pack included a turntable, an iPod touch, and a vinyl copy of Adele’s newest album (insert album name), while the tech themed prize pack included Bluetooth speakers, a Kindle Fire tablet, and a Smart Watch.

The opening bingo of the semester took place in Bast Gym for a change of pace for Spring (It always happens in Bast for the spring…). Many RC students always appreciate this temporary change as it provides more space and is less cramped than Bingo held in Alumni.

Be sure to watch out for more CAB events over the semester and to catch the end of the year bingo that is coming up quickly!
