The women’s and men’s tennis teams faced Bridgewater this week. The Maroon women topped the Eagles 8-1. The men however, lost 4-5 against Bridgewater.
In the singles competition, Emily Henderson, Briell Smith, Catherine Lee, Reed Kegel, and Tracy Kile all won their matches. The one loss the women had was from Rhealn Dinkins’ match which had ended with a retire because of an injury.
Many of the Maroons matches were easy wins. Henderson won her match 6-1, 6-0; Smith won 6-0, 6-3; Lee took hers 6-1, 6-1; Kegel won 6-0, 6-2. Kile was the only one who had to fight for her win. The outcome of her sets were 7-5, 3-6, 1-0 (10-5).
Roanoke’s women easily won all of their doubles matches. Henderson and Smith defeated their opponents 8-1. Kristen McDowell and Emma Baker also took down their opponents 8-1. Kegal and Lee won 8-2 in their match.
The men also had a successful day in the doubles matches, winning all of the matches. Matt Kessler and Jacob Morris won their match 8-3. Holden Branham and Joey Ross also defeated their opponents 8-3. Jose Alvarado and Bill Goins had a little more of a challenge, but still won 8-6.
Joey Ross was the only Maroon that won his singles match, defeating his opponent after three sets 2-6, 6-0, 6-1. Branham and Alvarado had close matches, both facing opponents that they had played in doubles, but neither of them were able to pull off the win in the singles matches.
Overall, the women are 6-8 this season and 3-0 in ODAC. Before this most recent 8-1 win over Bridgewater, the Maroons had won 7-2 over Guilford College, and 9-0 over Randolph College. The women will be playing Washington and Lee this Sunday at 11 AM on Elizabeth Campus.
This season the men are 3-5 overall, 2-2 in ODAC. The men will face Shenandoah University this Saturday at 1 PM on the Elizabeth Campus Courts.
