The Roanoke College women’s cross country team ran a race to remember on October 29th at the 2016 ODAC Championships in Buena Vista, VA. Finishing second as a team in the 6K, top times and honorable awards were presented to some of Roanoke’s fastest female runners. Placing first was the women of Washington and Lee University.
Senior Kerri Dalton owned the ODAC course as she crossed the finish line in first place for the females with a time of 22:39. Leaving the second place finisher 14 seconds behind her, Dalton’s effort earned her First-Team All-ODAC honors and was presented as ODAC Runner of the Year. The prestigious ODAC Runner of the Year award hasn’t been given to a Maroon since 2000, when Casey Smith ran a 19:13 6K at the 2000 ODAC Championships.
Senior Claire Brooks also had a race to remember as she crossed the finish line in fourth overall with a time of 23:23. Joining Dalton in the First-Team All-ODAC honors, Brooks has dropped her 6K time tremendously since her 2015 season where she ran a 25:15 in the ODAC Preview Meet.
The men also saw success in Buena Vista as they finished fifth as a team amongst ten other colleges. Dominating the 8K was junior Kevin Waterman who grabbed the 14th finishing spot, crossing the line at 27:07. Finishing before the rest of his teammates, Waterman was awarded Third-Team All-ODAC honors at the 2016 ODAC Championships.
Accumulating a total of 137 points as a team, Junior Howard Daniels also helped the men by completing the 8K in 27:18 snatching 18th place. Freshman, Tyler Barrett finished behind Daniels, crossing the line at 27:46.
Keep up with the cross country team as runners represent Roanoke at the NCAA Southeast Regional Conference on November 12th in Rome, Georgia.
