Heaven has a new God by the name of Castiel

The writers of Supernatural left the fans in shock at the end of season 6 as one of the show’s most popular characters, the angel Castiel, devoured the souls from Purgatory. Due to the astounding amounts of corrupting power Castiel somewhat loses his mind.

“I’m not an angel anymore. I’m your new God. A better one. So you will bow down and profess your love unto me, your Lord… or I shall destroy you,” Castiel said just before the credits rolled.

As if a megalomaniac rogue angel is not enough to deal with; Sam Winchester is struggling with the fallout from his visit to hell. Fans were in an uproar as they waited all summer to see how all this would be resolved.

The season premiere last Friday the 23rd did not disappoint. Castiel went on a killing spree where he claimed to be punishing the hypocrites and making the world a better place. The main characters, Sam and Dean, were at a loss as to how to fix things. They retreat as Dean fixes the Impala, destroyed in the last episode, and Sam fights to keep it together.

At first, it seems as though Castiel will be the new villain in the season. The boys try everything, which includes attempting to bind Death himself in order to stop the destruction. Nothing seems to get through to Castiel until Sam, exhausted and hopeless, decides to pray and pleads for him to see reason.

Some fans believe that Castiel redeemed himself when he willingly gave in, accepting that he was wrong and agreeing to return the souls to where they belong. With the souls back in Purgatory and Castiel back to normal, everything seemed like it was going to work out. Of course anyone who watches the show knows that it can never last.

The most unexpected aspect of the premiere was the introduction of the Leviathan. They are described on the show as being one of God’s first creations, failed monsters that are more powerful than anyone can imagine and were being held in Purgatory. When Castiel sucked up the souls, he also acquired the Leviathan who does not want to go back. The final seconds of the premiere, show the Leviathan laughing maniacally in control of Castiel’s vessel.

Many fans had predicted what they thought the premiere was going to be like and it is safe to say that not many, if anyone, expected this kind of beginning. The writers have done their research and seem to have a clear idea of what they want to happen this season. If this season’s episodes match up to the promise of the premiere then season 7 could be the best one yet.
