RC Softball Takes Home Two Against Guilford

During their double header on Wednesday the Roanoke College softball team took home two wins against the Quakers of Guilford College. The Maroons are now 11-3 in the regular season going 2-0 in ODAC competition. Guilford took an early lead in the first game as Brittany Donathan hit double to left field that plated teammates Allie Nicholson and Cynthia Hayes. Rachel Howard added to their two run lead with a single that brought Sarah Cutright home. However, the Maroons were quick to tie up the match bringing in three of their own runs in the next inning. Alea Bier hit a RBI single that scored Leona Rainey and Stephanie Clark blasted a two-run home run to tie the game 3-3.

Roanoke continued their scoring streak as Rhea Schleicher hit a two-run homer in the second inning to bring the score to 5-3. Casey Sneed of the Quakers battled back with a homerun in the top of the third to close the gap. However, that would be the last run that Guilford would get in this contest. The Maroons would tally in one run in each of the next innings along with home run from Alexis Roop to end the game with a 9-4 win over the Quakers.

Kelly Higbie would pick up the win for this game after giving up only four runs off of eight hits and striking out two. Alea Bier went 2-3 in the first game, with two RBIs and one run scored. Stephanie Clarke and Rhea Schleicher also had 2 RBIs and scored two runs during the contest.

In the second game, the teams found themselves tied at 1-1 through the first three innings. However, Morgan Wood broke the game open with her first career homerun which brought in two runs for the Maroons. Rainey and Schleicher would both cross the plate later in the fourth inning, capitalizing on an error on the defense. Roanoke led going into the fifth 5-1. The Quakers managed to score two runs in each of the next two innings, successfully tying up the game 5-5. In the bottom of the six the Maroons secured the lead after Bier, Clark, and Hollee Warlitner each had an RBI single. Thus, Roanoke took the lead 9-5 against Guilford.

In the top of the seventh the Quakers rallied to tie the Maroons. Autumn Yoder hit an RBI single that scored Nicholson and then Guilford loaded the bases. A three run double tied the game 9-9. In the bottom of the ninth Wood blasted a walk-off homerun to end the game 10-9 in favor of the Roanoke College Maroons.

In the second contest, Morgan Wood led the team in hitting, going 3-4 with two runs scored, three RBIs and two home runs. Leona Rainey scored a team-high three runs during the game and Stephanie Clark pitched a complete game bring home the victory and striking out four. The Maroons will play this weekend in the Roanoke Valley College Softball Bash. Their first game will be held at 2:00pm at the Botetourt Complex on Friday.
