Home Section B - Sports Volleyball



The Roanoke College volleyball team went 2-2 this week, taking 1 of 3 games at the Pioneer Classic hosted by Marietta College in Ohio and later taking a game from the Flying Squirrels of Mary Baldwin College.

Roanoke’s first match of the Pioneer Classic came on Saturday, 9/21, against Denison University. The Maroons fell 3-0 by scores of 25-17, 25-9, and 25-10 in this match. Senior Samantha Klostermann led the Maroons with six kills, and her 11 digs were second to Macey Tyree’s 12 digs. The Maroons did not allow this loss to get them down as the rebounded to win their match against West Virginia Tech later that evening, taking all three sets. The Maroons won by scores of 25-12, 25-18, and 25-19. Macey Tyree led the team with 6 kills, and Mackenzie Allen and Samantha Klostermann followed with 4 kills apiece.

Roanoke ended the tournament by dropping all three sets to Marietta College by scores of 25-19, 25-21, and 25-13. Klostermann led the team with 12 kills and Jessica Block led the team with 11 assists. Mackenzie Tyree and Macey Tyree picked up 17 and 11 digs respectively

The Roanoke volleyball team traveled up I-81 to face the Flying Squirrels of Mary Baldwin College on Tuesday night, 9/24/13. The ladies improved their record to 11-6 on the season when they took three sets from the Flying Squirrels and only surrendering one set. Mary Baldwin’s one set was taken from the Maroons by the narrow margin of 23-25.

Roanoke’s four set victory came with scores of 25-14, 23-25, 25-10, and 25-19. Samantha Klostermann led the Maroons with 17 kills and picking up 9 digs. Sophomore Alexandra Martin and freshman Jessica Block both picked up 11 assists during the contest. Senior Mackenzie Tyree and Freshman Carrie Heldreth picked up 11 digs and 9 digs respectively. Heldrethh also score four aces on her serves to the Flying Squirrels.

The Maroons next game will be on Friday, 9/27, against Southern Virginia University played at Roanoke in the Bast Center. The contest will start at 6:30 PM.
