Volleyball Reaches Semifinals

Volleyball traveled to Virginia Wesleyan Wednesday night to face the Marlins in the first round of the ODAC playoffs. The Maroons and Marlins met earlier this season on October 12, resulting in Virginia Wesleyan winning 3 games to 2. However, the playoffs ended differently as the Maroons made quick work of the Marlins to win and advance to the semi-finals for their first time since 2009. The Maroons swept Virginia Wesleyan by scores of 25-21, 25-19, and 25-16 to pick up their 19th victory this season.

Samantha Klostermann and Sarah Long led the team in kills with 8 and 6 respectively. Mackenzie Tyree led the Maroons in digs with 15, followed by Macey Tyree with 12, and Allison White with 10. Also adding to the Maroons’ victory were the 25 errors made by the Marlins throughout the competition, which was more than twice as many as the Maroons’ 12.

With this victory the volleyball team goes on to face Washington & Lee for the second time this season. The last time the two teams met was October 16 when the Generals swept the Maroons by scores of 25-15, 25-23, and 25-17. The Maroons are looking to take the momentum from their win into this next match with Washington & Lee. Samantha Klostermann acknowledges the skills the Generals have, but still believes that the Maroons will come out on top. Samantha Klostermann ’14 said “We know that they are going to get their points; they are a solid team, but we have come a long way and if we play with confidence and excitement then we are going to give them a run for their money and pull out a win”.

Washington & Lee who led the ODAC with a 26-6 record and 10-1 in ODAC play, will be hosting the tournament on Saturday, November 9th, at home in Lexington, VA. The first game of the semi-finals is between Roanoke College ranked at 5th seed, and Washington & Lee ranked at 1st seed. That game will take place at 10:00 AM. In the early afternoon at 12:30 PM, 7th seed Bridgewater College will face 3rd seed Lynchburg College. The winners of the semi-final matches will then play each other later that night while the losers will be eliminated from the tournament. The ODAC championship game time has not been determined yet, but it will be played Saturday evening after the completion of the semi-final games.
