With the fall’s athletic season over it is time for men’s and women’s basketball to take the court for the 2013-2014 season. The men’s team looks to rebound from last season in which they finished 12-15, 4-12 in ODAC play. Of the 16 players on the team roster, half have returned from the previous season. Returning for the Maroons are Cameron Smith ‘16, Stefan Vulevic ‘14, Ethan Humphries ‘14, Julian Ramirez ‘15, Andrew Daniels ‘15, Daniel Eacho ‘15, Seth Bradley ‘16, and Alexander Weant ‘15.
The Maroons are ranked 10th out of 12 teams in the ODAC during a preseason poll that ranked Randolph-Macon, Hampden-Sydney, and Virginia Wesleyan the top 3 teams in the conference. The men’s season begins this weekend when they play Gordon College and Goucher College at the Goucher Tournament in Baltimore, MD. Before the season started the Maroons played Winthrop University, a Division I school, to get ready for the season. Though the Maroons lost by a score of 93-74, they played well, winning the first half 40-37 before Winthrop came back to take the game with a 34-56 second half. Andre Daniels led the Maroons with 15 points followed by Daniel Eacho and Cameron Smith with 11 points, John Fitchett with 10 points, and Julian Ramirez with 9 points.
The women’s basketball team also starts the season this weekend when they play Alma College and York College at the Guilford Tip-Off Classic in Greensboro, NC. Head coach Susan Dunagan is entering her 33rd season with the Maroons and is looking to pick up her 600th career victory, an accomplishment only 45 coaches in NCAA Divisions I, II, and III have done before. Coach Dunagan currently has 598 wins and hopes to pick up 2 more early this season.
The women were placed 7th out of 12 teams in ODAC in the preseason polls that ranked Eastern Mennonite University, Guilford, and Lynchburg in the top 3. Four starters, Laurel Hankins, Paxton Gwin, Kelsey Smith, and Tatum KcKee, return from last season in which the Maroons went 10-16, 6-10 in ODAC competition.
Women’s basketball will play their first home game on Tuesday November, 19 when they play Ferrum at 7:00pm. The Men’s home opener will be Monday November, 25 when they host Greensboro College at 7:00pm. Come out to the Bast Gym to support the Maroons as they start their seasons and look to win ODAC championships this season.
