Women’s Basketball

The Roanoke College Women’s Basketball team returned from break sooner than most students to continue their season, but they still showed up rested and ready to play. The Maroons had their first game of the new semester just one day after the turn of the New Year when they traveled a few miles up the road to face Hollins University. The Maroons picked up an easy win in a game where they scored within the first minute of the game to take a lead that they never gave up. The 72 – 56 victory is the first win for the Maroons since they won Coach Dunagan’s 600th career win on November 17, 2013. The win ended a 7 game losing streak for the women’s basketball team.

Three days later on 1/5/14 the Maroons hosted Stevenson University who was quickly defeated 68-46 in another game during which the Maroons held the lead for the entire game. Paxton Gwin led the Maroons with 21 points and 11 rebounds, she also helped the team with two blocks and a steal in a performance that helped earn her the ODAC Women’s Basektball Player of the Week award.

The Women’s team next hosted Eastern Mennonite University who came to Roanoke determined to end the Maroons’ two game winning streak. Eastern Mennonite University battled back and forth through the first half with Roanoke College during a 20 minute period in which the lead changed a total of five times and was tied at four different points. However, after the half, the Maroons came out determined to hold their slim lead through the remainder of the game, winning 69 – 65. Paxton Gwin and Laurel Hankins led the Maroons with 19 and 13 points respectively. Laurel led with 7 rebounds followed by Paxton Gwin, Markia Beckwith, and Tatum McKee who each had 6 rebounds.

Most recently, on Wednesday 11/15/14, the Maroons faced Emory & Henry in another game in which the Maroons dominated for the whole game. The Maroons scored just 15 seconds into the game and only allowed Emory & Henry to tie the game up once at the 15:48 mark, but regained the lead and held onto it for the remainder of the game, ending with a final score of 78-66. Paxton Gwin led the Maroons with 21 points, followed by Kelsey Smith with 16, Laurel Hanks with 13, and Tatum Mckee with 13.
