Wednesday night’s game was a comfortable blow out for the Roanoke College women’s basketball team, as they took the lead in the first 9 seconds and held on to the lead throughout the entire game with the exception of a 20 second period of time with Emory & Henry held a small two point lead. Starting at the 15:42 mark of the first half the Maroons took the lead, only piling on points to the despair of their opponents.

The Maroons’ largest lead came at the 2:43 mark when they took a whopping 20 point lead off of two good free throws by Kelsey Smith. Emory & Henry tried to battle back to make their deficit smaller for the second half, and were mildly successful as the two teams left for the locker rooms at half time with the score sitting at 45 – 29 in favor of the Maroons.

The second half started with a good three pointer by Emory & Henry’s Kristie Langly, but Laurel Hankins of Roanoke College would not allow her opponent to get any momentum as she sank a three pointer of her own just 21 seconds later. With that three pointer, the Maroons continued to binge score points, never leading by fewer than 13 points in the half and leading by as many as 26 with 1:26 remaining. With a minute and a half remaining in the game and behind 87 – 61, the Wasps of Emory & Henry did the unthinkable, they started to rally to make a comeback.

Emory & Henry made a good layup to decrease the deficit. Emory & Henry followed up one layup with a second layup to score an unanswered 4 point run. As hard as they tried to come back though, the clock just wouldn’t slow down for them, and the Maroons emerged triumphant over their opponents 87 – 65.

Paxton Gwin led the Maroons with 18 points followed by Laurel Hankins and Tatum McKee with 13 a piece, and Hannah Ward with 10 points. Paxton Gwin also led the Maroons in rebounds, pulling down 7 rebounds, followed by Tatum McKee and Kanisha Wiley with 6.

The women’s next two games are at home as they play host to ODAC rivals Washinton and Lee on Saturday, February 8th, at 2:00 pm and Hollins University on Wednesday, February 12th, at 7:00 pm. Both games will be played in the C. Homer Bast Gym.
