Last Saturday, April 5, the Roanoke College Activities Board (CAB) took a group of students to see the premiere of Captain America: The Winter Soldier. When the students signed up at the info desk in Colket, they were asked to provide a $5 deposit which was returned to them upon arrival at the movie theater. On top of the return of their money (making the trip and movie free), the activities board provided the students with a free concessions gift card so that they could buy a snack for the movie.
Several people who have seen the movie, including myself have concluded that it is, in a word, fantastic. In my opinion, it was even better than the first movie. Marvel just knows how to do movies right (especially when it comes to casting the amazing and amazing-looking Chris Evans). The movie had an estimated budget of $170 million and it is clear that the money was well spent. Throughout the 136 minutes in the theater, the audience was bombarded with almost non-stop action. The action was not completely CGI made either. The bulk of the battles are in awesome, skin-tingling, hand-to-hand combat scenes that, trust me, will rock your world. And Chris Evans was not the only one kicking butt in this new movie. Scarlett Johansson had a significant ass-kicking role as well. Again, another great casting call by Marvel Studios.
Without revealing too much, this movie will have you clinging to your best friend as it raises the question: What would you do if your best friend no longer remembered who you were? Captain America does exactly what a hero of his caliber would be expected to do. But you’ll have to watch it to find out what that was.
And apparently all of this just kept people coming back for more as the estimated opening weekend box office number the #1 for this year so far. The movie was also a big hit overseas as the worldwide gross lifetime summary thus far is $315,320,329. And I have no doubt that Captain America: The Winter Soldier will continue to do well in the box office as is the movie, in the best sense of the word, a Marvel. See it, see it, see it.
