Thunder of Roanoke Debuts Alumni Weekend
By Amanda Wright
For the past couple years an interesting idea has been brewing within the Roanoke Music Department. What began as a series of conversations between former student Neil Huss and Dr. Joseph Blaha will be put to the test this coming Sunday during the Men’s Lacrosse game at 2:00 p.m. Huss will direct the courageous volunteer Pep Band, Thunder of Roanoke, to determine the viability of the project. This will be the first time in Roanoke’s history that a pep band will perform for a Lacrosse game.
The Basketball Pep Band, coordinated by Dr. Blaha, is a mixture of wind and jazz ensemble students who play at six to eight home games during the basketball season. Huss is a member of both ensembles and he arranged the score for Maroon Victory, which was thought to have been lost to the winds of time. Due to the popularity of the Pep Band and the constant battle with awareness of lagging school spirit scores, it was decided that the Pep Band will attend more games and will further increase campus visibility.
Thus, the Thunder of Roanoke was born. Currently the new Pep Band consists of ten members, but is open to anyone on campus who plays an instrument and wants to join. While Huss is choosing stand tunes based on the number of volunteers for Saturday’s debut, he would welcome any additional help. Huss’s hope is to add more trumpets, saxophones, flutes, percussionists, and a tuba player to the mix, but all instrument players are encouraged to apply. Contact Dr. Blaha for more information.
Senior Survey Results showed that our school spirit is not as high as the impression students received when they visited before attending Roanoke College. A few groups, such as student government’s Public Relations Committee, will have spirit days like Maroon Madness to help increase and engage attendance at local sporting events. The Athletic Department, in conjunction with other organizations, sponsors Pack the House events to drive attendance and increase the idea of school spirit.
If you are curious as to what the new venture will look like, come out to the Men’s Lacrosse game this Saturday at 2:00 p.m. and help Thunder in Roanoke cheer them on!
