Roanoke College hosted the first Open Mic Night of the year last Friday. The event was originally scheduled to be outside on the outdoor stage in front of the Colket Center, but was then moved indoors to Cavern due to rainy weather. Before open mic night began, Roanoke’s own Cory Campbell Band treated students to live performance. Once the band finished their set, Open Mic Night officially began.

RC students showed off an assortment of talents including stand-up comedy, guitar playing, singing, and dancing. The music included covers, acapella, and even an original song. Audience members heard many different songs from a variety of genres. Some of the most notable performances included; Wagon Wheel, the Kenyan national anthem, and the theme song from the Nickelodeon show Drake and Josh.
The night included several solos, but students also teamed up and gave great performances in duets and trios. Freshman Megan Brown was one of the several singers of the night. She sang Train’s hit song, “Soul Sister”, and had a great time performing. When asked what she thought of the event, Brown said, “It was entertaining, and it really helped pull people out of their shell.”

All of the performers were eligible to win the grand prize or one of the smaller prizes offered within four subcategories. The overall grand prize was a movie basket with prizes worth a total of fifty dollars. The contest was then further divided into categories such as: funniest, best group performances, best stage presence, and most original. The various category winners each received a fifteen-dollar gift card as a prize.

Judges had a hard time deciding between all of the amazing performances, but in the end, the overall grand prize was awarded to freshman Johnny Bounds. Bounds was involved in several of the night’s performances and showed off his talent for both singing and playing the guitar.

RC honors music fraternity, Mu Beta Psi, organized open Mic Night. They helped to plan the event and sponsor the great prizes. If you missed your chance to see or perform in this Open Mic Night there will be more Open Mic Nights scheduled throughout the year.
