Roanoke Riding Team at Bridgewater College

On Friday, Feb. 20, the Roanoke Riding Team traveled to Bridgewater College to compete at their third Intercollegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) show of the spring semester. The day before, the team headed to Coach Carolyn Williams’ farm for one last practice before the show.
“Our lesson was good. We brushed up on a few things and it made us feel more prepared for the show. Halfway through the lesson, we switched horses because at the show we have to ride random horses at the host college,” said Marisa Patton, Senior captain.
Roanoke finished with 20 points, placing them in 9th as a team. In the first class of the day, sophomore Bekah Lamb won her flat class in the Novice division. Then, she had a solid round over fences and placed 5th.
Also representing RC in the Novice division, freshman Melanie Rousseau had a consistent jump course and placed 5th in good company. Rousseau placed in 2nd her flat class with a beautiful ride.
For her first time in the Novice division, Lizzie Kronander had a great ride in a large class. Kroander placed out of the Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter division at the previous show.
Patton rode beautifully in her Intermediate flat class in good company. Earlier this season, Patton placed out of the Novice division and moved up to Intermediate.
Also in the Intermediate division, sophomore Shannon Yard improved after a bad first jump and placed 5th. Yard placed 4th in her competitive flat class.
In the Advanced Walk/Trot/Canter division, Freshman Kyra Sucharski rode next and placed 5th. Senior Stephanie Brasier finished the day for Roanoke and placed 2 in her flat class with an excellent ride.
It was a beautiful morning at Bridgewater while sophomores Bekah Lamb, Shannon Yard, and Melanie Rousseau walked their jumping courses. During the course walk, riders make a plan for their ride and measure the distances between each jump.
The team has a busy weekend next weekend as they head to Hollins University on Saturday, Feb. 27 and Sunday, Feb. 28. The team is also headed to Regionals at Randolph College on Mar. 19 with Patton and Kronander.
